Ah the ole’ ball and chain…
No, I am not talking about your spouse; I am talking about your desk. Yes, the dreaded wooden beast that haunts your weekends like the ghost of fun time past. All you can hear in the office is the deafening click clacks of keys, irritating water cooler chatter when all you need is a cup of coffee to jump start your brain, or meetings that could have been summed up in an email. You know what I’m talking about.
But there is another way. You don’t have to sit behind a desk to earn money. You can have a high paying job while not sitting in your swivel chair wishing you were literally any other place. Below are some careers in which you won’t be stuck behind a desk from 9-5.
1. College Professor
Whether you are in college choosing a major or already in a career looking for a switch, teaching classes can always be an option for you. It involves more schooling if you don’t have a technical background, or not an expert in your subject. However, it is minimal compared to how much freedom you want. Think you would enjoy a month off for Christmas? Or how about a week off for Easter? Want to try to write that book finally? Well you will have three months of Summer to do it. Plus, you are helping shape the future generations. Make a different plus time to travel? The pay is not that bad either. A college prof can make between 40,000-60,000 depending on the school and what they teach. Most universities offer part time, teaching only a few classes to get your feet wet.
I am not asking you to be the next Hemingway. However, if you feel like you’ve got a million dollar book idea, then give it a shot. What is the worst that could happen? Rejection is not the end of the world and you will be rejected. You will get rejected by every single publisher you try for years and years and then you publish it online for $1 and still get your story out there.
Now there are many different ways to become a writer. Self publishing is great if the big guys aren’t interested. You can make a lot of money too depending on how popular your work gets. Look at 50 Shades of Gray. That book started as an online fanfiction for Twilight. Now, there are more books, movies, and a soundtrack. Another great example, Nicholas Sparks has an excellent formula for best selling books. Boy meets girl in an unlikely setting, fall in love, fight, break up, find each other again, one of them dies, the end. Find a winning ad lib like that, and you’re in for a world of fame.
3. Flight attendants
Love to travel? Flight attendants make pretty good money at less than 40,000. You can travel the world, stay in hotels for free, and meet new people literally every time you step into your “office”. You have at least a night in the city that you are staying in which if you don’t mind being a little tired in the morning, is plenty of time to sight see. Plus, you get a discount on flights! No additional school is required. You do a couple of interviews with the airline and then boom, you’re off.
4. Mining Engineer
One of the highest paying jobs on this list, and in general, a mining engineer fits many people who want a high paying job, but don’t want to climb any corporate ladders. This one does requite a bit of schooling and you actually have to be interested in this subject. However, these guys make around 95,000. You are doing a great service as well by being the safety measure for the men and women that mine. You make sure the equipment is running correctly and make sure the conditions are safe. There is a level of danger for this profession so do be careful. But for the money, travel, and adventure, its not a bad gig.
5. Personal Trainer
Have a knack for fitness? This has a lot of appeal for people who don’t like the desk or the usual hours. You can start your own business with this, create blogs, YouTube, your own personal brand. You could also work for a gym. Or do both. There is a lot of flexibility with this one and it pays great no matter which road you take. Although starting as your own brand might take some time to gain some loyal customers, it will be so worth it in the long run. They make an average of 55,000 or more. That is a pretty sweet dollar amount to change people’s lives and make them better versions of themselves.
This is just a taste of the careers you could have where you are not stuck behind a desk. It really is as simple as, if you can dream it, you can do it. It is just a matter of doing it. Don’t be a afraid, you aren’t going to end up living under a bridge if this does not work out. And if it does work out, everything was worth it.
